I think Rushdie's just frustrated - capitalism is great, but it's like that old saying - "your hannah montana disgusts me, but I will defend to the death your right to watch it." Sometimes it still is awful to have to have that mentality, even if it is supposedly for the better good.

he's definitely a little misguided - shoes probably wouldn't help much. But how much can a guy be expected to know about women when he still loves his first cousin?[ROLLEYES]

Nice parallel, and the best, least unnecessarily provocative summary of Brown's book ever[SMILE]; just as an aside - have you read Foucault's Pendulum? It's about some publishers of occult books that start their own fake secret society, but actually describe it too realistically, and become the victims of other secret societies.

I like how you used the theme of names here - a very tight intro also. Perfect setup[SMILE]

Yes! "Smarmy" was the adjective I forgot to use. For whatever reason, I like smarmy. Smarmy is instantly unlikeable, and requires the speaker to justify their smarminess. I suppose if I consider a speaker able to justify it, then they have earned my respect, because there is a lot of unjustified smarminess in the media nowadays[SMILE]. But maybe that's just me.

Thank You. But I wasn't going for clever points, actually - it merely kept me from sounding even more hostile to Head. And I think it might indeed be hard, but it's very important to legitimately criticize any form of creative expression.

I, also, am not enthusiastic about the "show..." adage - which is why I used it - to highlight how amateurish her structure is, that she actually needs that advice. But structure is different than content, and perhaps she Is a creative genius, content-wise.[SMILE]

[THUMBUP] I loved that post. I agree with every single part of it. I also would like to comment on the second part, about the country music advertising nostalgia-mongerers - it fascinates me that the demographic this lifestyle advertises to are the ones least in need of it - ask them about single-payer healthcare, alternative fuel sources, subsidized housing, and no war for oil, and they're politically opposed to it - because the people who most need those things are the most sold on patriotic consumerism, for patriotic but not practical reasons. Sad.

Your picture was relevant and insightful, and it made me into that weirdo in the computer lab who snorts loudly, so thanks for that.[SMILE] My Grandfather fought in the Pacific theater, and he also succumbed to Alzheimer's - and I have to say, he became kind of a jerk about it also, very much like Ono. The stories certainly became more detailed as it progressed. He would often threaten us with death in the way he dispatched the Japanese on Okinawa - and he'd make that knife-across-the-throat gesture. I wonder, if Ono doesn't have a medical excuse, why is he being so evasive?

I'm really sorry about the font sizes. Two different documents were merged, and I didn't notice.

As far as sociopathy, well, ask anyone I know - I actually use it as an insult almost daily. According to the DSM-IV, it's actually a fairly basic condition that can apply to a good proportion of society, plus it has great rhetorical impact. So it's perfect, because it sounds really terrible, but it's also usually provably true.[THUMBUP]

Ono, though - I can empathize, but I can't sympathize with him.
